I've been fasting since 5pm Sunday. It's not my first fast, I've been using IF for about 2 months now. This isn't my longest fast either.

I feel great, I haven't been hungry since Monday afternoon. It just...went away.

I work two days a week at veterinary hospital (if you missed it, I'm a registered vet tech), the last two days were slammed. Lots of emergencies, double booked appointments, and we're grossly short staffed. Yesterday I wasn't able to drink much, getting to my 40oz Hydroflask was hard. It got me thinking about electrolytes though, I really need to supplement my fasting days with them and I've neglected doing so.

My question is, which commercial electrolyte supplement does everyone here use? I'm also leaning toward making my own, so which recipe are your favorite? A simple one I found would only need some Himalayan salt added to my lemon water. Seems easy enough.

Thanks all. I look forward to your responses!! 🙂

I used to use Sports Salts, but have since migrated to Perfect Keto's electrolytes.  Whenever they are on sale for 20% off or more, the price is better than Sports Salts. Incidentally, when they have their Black Friday sale, I expect them to be 40%-50% off.  That's when I stock up.

I have used Dr Bergs the past 4 years. I don’t like that it has stevia in it. I cut the entire container with 1/2 HPS by weight. When I open a fresh jar (300 gr)  I add 150 g of HPS to the mix in the container and stir it up. Then I dispense with the little scoop that comes in the container.

Here is my daily drink mix: in a half gallon pitcher put:

  • three scoops of electrolyte/HPS in the container.
  • Add 6 tablespoons lemon juice (pre squeezed and portioned in ice cube trays in freezer) and
  • 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. (My own live mother-in cider)

fill pitcher with luke warm water. Add the lid and shake each time before filling my cup throughout the day. I go through a pitcher or a bit more each day.  Cost $.25 per day

The extra HPS cuts the sweetness of the stevia.  The lemon and vinegar make it taste almost neutral. I have asked for the product without stevia to no avail.

I have been working towards using up my supply.  I have all the ingredients to make my own. I will be doing that moving forward. The Snake juice ratios are a good start. .

@simpletruths I probably should know this, but what is HPS? Something obvious that I'm not thinking of, right? LOL

@valkyrie- Himalayan Pink Salt. Sometimes we speak the acronyms and forget that others may not connect. 😉🤦🏼‍♀️

I was happy to hear that you started your fast on Sunday. I started a fast Saturday night that with the intention of going until Friday. I only made it to Tuesday night. Cooking for my husband who is non-keto, does me in.  I watched him for 2 days eat Cheerios and crackers even though I had food prepped and ready for him.  I let my guilt for his not eating well get in my way. Once I am cooking, fasting takes a back seat.

I applaud your persistence. When I do fast, like you explained, the hunger sensation does just go away as long as I take electrolytes in my water. Maybe I’ll use my homemade electrolyte mix during the fast rather than the Dr. Berg‘s.  Dang, I wish a company with make a mix without sweetener. I realize that electrolytes are mineral salts in various forms. Manufacturers are trying to cut the super salt taste. For me the lemon juice and ACV does it.  The drink does not taste salty at all and I can drink it easily.  Time to start making my own.

@simpletruths I KNEW it was something simple, HPS, of course! I'll try to remember that.

I was supposed to only go to Tuesday afternoon, but I wasn't hungry so figured why not go for as long as I am able. it was about 6pm last night that I simply wanted to eat something. Half of a smoked chicken breast and a peanut butter treat. I ended the evening at 1.7mmol/L ketones and 96mg/mL glucose.

@ketoadmin Sure Steve, that would be great. Do they need to be taken all the time, or just during fasts? Thanks!

@valkyrie   I use LyteBalance.  One capful in my morning coffee.  Nightly leg cramps are gone.

@calgaryguy What is this magic? I've had severe, foot twisting into a pretzel cramps for about 6 months. I've added magnesium to my supplement regimen and magnesium lotion, which has not helped. I'm going to load up on the different methods of electrolytes and see what works for me. Thanks!

@valkyrie I have tried magnesium and potassium both with limited results.  I started taking electrolytes during the big fast and was pleasantly surprised at the results.

Some people absorb different kinds of magnesium.  For magnesium, take 1 tsp of Epsom salts in a glass of warm water OR 2 capsules of Magnesium citrate.   My son the chemist and biologist D-I-L says the citrate minerals are more easily used by the body.  I can't speak for others but it works for me every time.  If I get the cramps now, it is because I forgot to take the magnesium.

@ketoadmin - I was able to place the order.  Just FYI - the SK link did not work but I put in the code and all worked just fine. Thanks for sharing Steve.
